Starting in 2027, holding a kid back a second year costs a college season

Starting with the fall 2027 class, the Division I eligibility clock starts at enrollment or the academic year after a player turns 19, whichever comes first. One held year still fits, and a second one costs a college season.

Division I has approved an age based eligibility model, and it changes the math on holding a kid back. The NCAA announced the vote, which was unanimous, in a June 23, 2026 release. The proposal first went to the Division I board in an April 27, 2026 item. The story came up on Buying Sandlot on September 14, 2026.

Under the old rule, the eligibility clock started when an athlete enrolled in college. Anything before enrollment, including a repeated grade or a post grad year, sat outside the count, and a player could arrive on campus older and bigger with every season still available.

Under the new model, athletes get up to five years of eligibility, according to the NCAA. The clock starts at college enrollment or at the start of the academic year after the athlete's 19th birthday, whichever comes first. It applies to anyone who first enrolls full time in fall 2027 or later.

The age trigger means the clock no longer waits for campus. A player who repeats one grade and enrolls at 19 still starts the clock on the first day of college, with the full window intact. A player who stacks a reclass and a post grad year and arrives at 20 has already started the clock in high school, because the academic year after the 19th birthday came first. That second held year comes out of college eligibility.

Reclassifying also runs the other way. The top ranked recruit in the 2027 class reclassified up a year, not back, according to his school's signing release.

The rule covers the class that enrolls in fall 2027 and every class after it.
